Cowley softball drops doubleheader at Seminole State College

Facing one of the top teams in the NJCAA Division I, the Cowley College softball team dropped a pair of games at No. 6-ranked Seminole State College-Oklahoma on Wednesday. The Trojans won the opener 8-0 before taking the nightcap 8-4.

"Going against a ranked team you have to play good softball, and unfortunately we did not have a good outing against Seminole," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "Offensively we didn't match their big innings and left too many runners in scoring position in game two."

Seminole State (5-1) out-hit Cowley 12-4 in the six-inning run-rule of game one. Brooke Mason (2-2) took the loss on the mound for the Lady Tigers, allowing nine hits and six runs in five innings pitched.

In game two, Cowley led 3-2 before Seminole State scored three runs in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth to win 8-4.

Ashlynn Mercer (1-2) took the loss on the mound as she allowed seven hits and five earned runs in six innings pitched. Mercer struck out six, but also walked five.

The Lady Tigers got a home run from sophomore Christian Wind in the loss. The homer was the second of the season for Wind.

Cowley, which is 5-5 on the season, will return home to face Barton Community College Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Cougars are 4-8 on the season.

"We have to keep looking to get better as a team, learning from these losses and moving forward to the next opponent," Hoyt said.
