Lady Tiger softball team sweeps another doubleheader against Connors State

Having already swept a doubleheader against Connors State two weeks ago in Arkansas City, the Cowley College softball team did it again Tuesday in Warner, OK, as the Lady Tigers won 6-2 and 11-5.

Trailing the second game by a score of 3-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning, Cowley rallied for nine runs in the inning. The Lady Tigers got home runs from freshmen Alivia Lange and Tobie Bellew in the nine-run seventh inning.

"The team showed great heart in the second game with having a big seventh inning rally and coming from behind to secure the win," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said.

Ashlyn Mercer allowed nine hits and five runs in the complete game victory of game two. Mercer struck out eight and walked two as she improved her record to 3-2.

Cowley, winners of four games in a row, is now 9-5 on the season. Connors State is now 2-8.

Brooke Mason (4-2) struck out seven and did not allow an earned run while going the distance on the mound in the 6-2 win of the opener.

"Connors is a great swinging team and going into the doubleheader we knew they would put the ball in play," Hoyt said. "We needed to capitalize on the routine outs and put some runs together for our pitchers."

Dezmen Duncan and Tatyana Curry had three hits apiece for the Lady Tigers, while Duncan drove in three runs.

Cowley will return home to play a doubleheader against Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The Lady Mavericks are 8-6 on the season.

"We have two doubleheaders left before heading into conference play, so we have to keep getting better and know the potential this team has," Hoyt said.
