Lady Tiger softball run-rules Hutchinson in doubleheader sweep

The Cowley College softball team needed only five innings to win both games of its home doubleheader against Hutchinson Community College on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers run-ruled Hutchinson 12-4 in game one and 10-2 in the nightcap.

Cowley has started to find its groove as the Lady Tigers have won six games in a row to improve its record to 11-5 on the season.

"Offensively we were strong in both games," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "We did a great job of getting runners on and then coming up with a big hit to get them in."

In game one, Cowley got a grand slam home run from sophomore Dezmen Duncan in a five-run second inning. Duncan would add a three-run homer in a five-run fifth inning as she finished 3-for-4 with two home runs and seven runs batted in.

"Dezmen's home runs were huge for the team and gave us momentum," Hoyt said.

The homers were the first two of the season for Duncan.

Alivia Lange's two-run homer completed the run-rule win. The homer was the second of the season for Lange.

Brooke Mason (4-2) allowed five hits and four runs in five innings pitched. She struck out four and walked one as she picked up her fourth win of the season.

In game two, Cowley got a pair of three-run homers from Tye North and Kayla McClellan. North and McClellan now lead the team with three home runs apiece.

Ashlynn Mercer (4-2) allowed five hits and two runs in five innings as she also earned her fourth win of the season.

"It wasn't Brooke or Ashlynn's best outing, but our defense really came through behind them and they both did a good job working out of innings with runners in scoring position," Hoyt said.

Hutchinson had won six games in a row prior to Tuesday's doubleheader. The Lady Blue Dragons are now 10-6 on the season.

Cowley will travel to Independence Community College for a doubleheader Thursday at 1 and 3 p.m.
