Cowley softball runs win streak to 10 games

Opening conference play with a pair of home doubleheaders, the Cowley College softball team rallied to win both games of a doubleheader against Neosho County on Saturday before run-ruling Cloud County in both games on Sunday.

The Lady Tigers trailed 2-1 in the first game against Neosho before winning 6-3. Cowley again trailed 4-1 in the second game against the Panthers before a five-run third inning helped lift the Lady Tigers to a 7-5 win.

In game one, freshman Tye North hit her fourth home run of the season and went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Freshman Brooke Mason went the distance on the mound, allowing only one earned run despite surrendering nine hits and five walks in seven innings.

In game two, Cowley's Kayla McClellan hit a two-run homer in the Lady Tigers' five-run third inning. The homer was the team-leading fifth of the season for McClellan.

Alivia Lange also played well, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI.

Sophomore Ashlynn Mercer earned the win as she allowed eight hits and four runs in seven innings pitched.

Freshman Cierah Jones homered in both games of the doubleheader against Cloud as the Lady Tigers needed only five innings in each game to run-rule the T-Birds 12-2 and 10-1.

The homers were the first two of the season for Jones, who drove in six in the doubleheader.

Mason went the first three innings in the opener against Cloud and allowed three hits and no earned runs as she improved her record to 6-2 on the season.

Dezmen Duncan added three hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in during the victory.

In the final game against Cloud, Elizabeth Luttrell and Paige Hughes each went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Ashlynn Mercer (6-2) had a solid outing on the mound, striking out eight and allowing only two hits and one run in four innings pitched.

Freshman reliever Sydni Williams did not allow a hit or walk in her three innings of relief as she finished off both wins against Cloud.

Cowley is now 15-5 overall and 4-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.

"As a whole I thought we had two good outings against Neosho and Cloud," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "Our hitters produced runs for our team in both games."

Neosho County is now 8-13 overall and 0-2 in the Jayhawk East, while Cloud County falls to 6-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Cowley's doubleheader at Maplewoods Community College on Tuesday has been cancelled. The Lady Tigers will instead prepare to play a doubleheader at Hesston College Thursday at 2 and 4 p.m. The Lady Larks are 9-5 overall and 1-1 in the Jayhawk East.
