Cowley softball remains atop conference standings with sweep of Coffeyville

The No. 19-ranked Cowley College softball team swept a home doubleheader against Coffeyville on Sunday. The Lady Tigers earned a 3-2, walk off win in the opener before scoring 12 runs in the first inning of a 12-3 run-rule win of game two.

Cowley, 24-8 overall, remains atop the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division with a conference record of 12-2. Coffeyville falls to 5-17 overall and 4-10 in the Jayhawk East.

In Sunday's opener, the score was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Tatyana Curry led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, stole second, and scored the winning run on a hit by Paige Hughes. The hit was the third of the game for Hughes.

Tye North homered in the win, while Curry went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Brooke Mason (11-3) went the distance on the mound and allowed seven hits and one earned run.

In game two, Tye North homered for the second straight game as she belted a grand slam to highlight the 12-run first inning for the Lady Tigers. The homer was the team-leading sixth of the season for North.

Kayla McClellan also played well as she went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs batted in.

"Our hitting focus and execution was a lot better the second game," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "We had some big at bats from Tatyana, Paige and Tye in the doubleheader."

Ashlynn Mercer allowed only one hit in 4 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory.

"Ashlynn and Brooke both threw really well in the doubleheader," Hoyt said.

Cowley improves to 18-1 at home on the season.

The Lady Tigers will prepare to play a road doubleheader at Cloud County on Thursday before playing a doubleheader at Neosho County on Saturday.

"We need to keep the momentum going and really pressure both teams," Hoyt said.
