Lady Tiger softball keeps Allen winless in the conference with sweep of doubleheader

The No. 10-ranked Cowley College softball team picked up a pair of road wins at Allen Community College on Saturday. The Lady Tigers defeated Allen 5-2 in game one before run-ruling the Red Devils 11-0 in game two.

Cowley (29-11), winners of three games in a row, remains in second place in the Jayhawk Conference Division B with a record of 17-5. Allen, losers of 21 games in a row, is now 5-26 overall and 0-16 in the Jayhawk East.

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, Cowley broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth inning by getting a run-scoring single by sophomore Elizabeth Luttrell and a three-run homer by freshman Kayla McClellan. McClellan went 3-for-4 in the victory.

Sophomore Brooke Mason (13-4) made the lead stand up by allowing only five hits and no earned runs in seven innings pitched.

In game two, Cowley scored three innings in the first inning and added four more in the second to lead 7-0. The Lady Tigers would score in four of five innings in the victory.

McClellan was one of five Lady Tigers with two hits apiece in the victory as she again drove in three runs. McClellan is now batting .379 with five home runs and a team-leading 42 runs batted in.

"We finished the day on a high note where we were really pressuring their defense," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "We had some great at bats out of Kayla McClellan and Lyz Luttrell, while Dezmen Duncan kept them on their toes with her baserunning."

Sophomore Ashlynn Mercer (12-3) went the first four innings, allowing only three hits and no runs. Sydni Williams pitched a scoreless fifth inning to finish off the win.

"Ashlynn continued to be strong and get routine outs for our defense," Hoyt said.

After committing three errors in the opener, Cowley played an error free game in the nightcap.

Cowley will be back in action Thursday when they play a doubleheader at Labette (24-12) beginning at 2 p.m. The Lady Cardinals are 15-3 in the Jayhawk Conference Division A.

"We have to be the better team that day," Hoyt said. "Offensively, we have to produce runs for both pitchers and capitalize on the routine outs our pitchers get us. Labette will play us strong, we just have to respond stronger."
