Tough stretch continues for Lady Tiger softball team

Facing its second straight ranked opponent, the No. 14-ranked Cowley College softball team suffered its second consecutive doubleheader sweep. This time, the Lady Tigers fell at No. 7-ranked Highland on Thursday. The Lady Scotties needed just five innings in each game to win 10-2 and 8-0.

With the wins, Highland captured its second straight conference title. The Lady Scotties are now 38-6 overall and 23-3 in the Jayhawk Conference Division B. Cowley falls to 31-17 overall and are in second place in the conference with a record of 19-9.

In game one, sophomore pitcher Brooke Mason helped her cause at the plate by hitting an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning as the Lady Tigers would go on to tie the game at 2-2. However, Highland would score four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and four more in the fifth to run-rule Cowley 10-2.

Mason took the loss as she allowed nine hits and seven runs in 4 2/3 innings.

In game two, the Lady Scotties' Lauryn John son hit a two-run homer off Cowley starting pitcher Ashlynn Mercer in the second inning and another two-run homer by Rosie Anguiano in the bottom of the fifth inning punctuated the 8-0 run-rule win.

Mercer allowed seven hits and six earned runs in the loss.

Cowley will wrap up the regular season by playing a doubleheader at Coffeyville (9-27) Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. The Red Ravens are 8-20 in the conference.
