Lady Tiger softball team wraps up regular season with wins at Coffeyville
After dropping four straight games against ranked opponents, the No. 17--ranked Cowley College softball team got back on track with a pair of wins at Coffeyville on Saturday. The Lady Tigers defeated Coffeyville 10-3 and 15-8 as they finished the regular season in second place in the Jayhawk Conference Division B.
Cowley improves its record to 33-17 overall and finished 21-9 in the conference, while Coffeyville (9-29) finished 8-22 in conference play.
In Saturday's opener, Cowley rallied from a 3-1 deficit to win 10-3. Sophomore pitcher Brooke Mason went the distance on the mound, allowing five hits and two runs in seven innings. Mason struck out seven and did not walk a batter as she improved to 15-7 on the season.
Paige Hughes had four hits and three stolen bases as she is now batting .492 with 37 stolen bases.
Cowley led game two 10-0 before Coffeyville chased Lady Tiger starting pitcher Ashlynn Mercer (15-5) from the game by scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, Sydni Williams came on to pitch the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed two hits and no earned runs while Cowley scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away for the 15-8 win.
Kayla McClellan and Brylea Teufel homered in the nightcap and Cowley out-hit Coffeyville 18-6. The homer by McClellan was her team-leading eighth of the season.
Cowley will now prepare to play in the double elimination Plains District B Softball Tournament Saturday and Sunday in Topeka, KS. The Lady Tigers earned the fourth seed in the tournament and will play fifth-seeded Kansas City (39-13) Saturday at noon. The loser will play again at 2 p.m., while the winner will play at 4 p.m.
