Lady Tiger softball team struggles in doubleheader at No. 4-ranked Seminole State

Ranked No. 15-ranked in the NJCAA Division II preseason poll, the Cowley College softball team found few bright spots in its doubleheader played at Seminole State College, ranked fourth in the NJCAA Division I, Thursday in Seminole, OK. The Lady Tigers were run-ruled in both games, 13-0 and 9-1.

Seminole chased Cowley starting pitcher Saige Smith (2-4) after only two innings and scored 13 runs in only four innings at bat. The Lady Tigers mustered only one hit in the loss, a single by McKinzi Sowles.

Game two did not go much better for Cowley as the Trojans scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to the 9-1, five-inning win. Seminole State benefited from four Cowley errors and allowed only six hits in the doubleheader.

"Seminole is a tough team and going in we knew we had to play strong on defense and have a good outing on offense," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "Only having six hits on the day isn't having competitive at bats. We had multiple routine outs we didn't capitalize on which led to us having to pitch to more batters. All these things we need to clean up before we start conference play."

Sowles again had one of Cowley's five hits in the nightcap and drove in the team's only run with a double. Kennedy Toothman took the loss for Cowley as she surrendered seven runs.

Cowley has dropped six games in a row and is now 4-9 on the season. After losing its first two games, the Trojans (6-2) have now won six games in a row.

The Lady Tigers have postponed their doubleheader at Seminole State on Friday due to inclement weather and will look to get back on track when they play a doubleheader at Friends University Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m. in Wichita, KS.
