Lady Tiger softball team opens 4-0 in Jayhawk Conference

Friends JV shocks Lady Tiger softball team in doubleheader sweep

The Cowley College softball team struggled throwing strikes in its doubleheader against the Friends University JV Tuesday in Wichita as four Lady Tiger pitchers combined to walk 19 batters in the two games. The free passes came back to haunt Cowley as they dropped both games by scores of 10-9 and 5-2.

Cowley led the first game 5-0 following a three-run homer by freshman McKinzi Sowles in the top of the third inning. However, Friends scored five runs off five walks and two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-5.

The teams would trade a pair of runs in the sixth inning as they went to the seventh tied 7-7. Lady Tiger sophomore Kyla Bonnarens put Cowley back in front 9-7 with a towering two-run homer with two outs in the top of the seventh.

Needing three outs to win the game, Cowley failed to record an out in the final inning as the Falcons scored three runs to win 10-9.

Saige Smith (2-5) started for Cowley and allowed 10 runs, 10 walks and nine hits in five innings pitched. Bonnarens had three of Cowley's 13 hits, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, and three runs batted in.

Cowley led game two 2-0, but once again Friends came back thanks to Cowley's inability to throw strikes. Ellie Kuntz (1-3) started on the mound for the Lady Tigers and allowed five runs on five hits and seven walks in five innings pitched.

Sophomore Tye North had two of Cowley's five hits in the loss. Cowley has dropped eight games in a row as they are now 4-11 on the season.

The Lady Tigers will look to bounce back when they host the Kansas Wesleyan University JV in a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m.
