Lady Tigers score over 100 points for second game in a row

Breaking the century mark for the second straight game, the Cowley College women's basketball team built a commanding 66-20 halftime lead over Allen Community College and cruised to the 108-53 home win Wednesday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.

Cowley forced the Lady Red Devils into 25 first half turnovers and out-scored Allen 39-2 on points off turnovers as they built the insurmountable halftime lead.

Sophomore Jayden Marlnee scored 14 of her 16 points in the opening half. The Lady Tigers' lead grew to 92-37 at the end of the third quarter as they registered their largest margin of victory this season.

"We didn't back down, stayed aggressive, and were focused throughout," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Cowley, winners of four games in a row, is now 9-4 overall and 7-4 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. The Lady Tigers remain in fourth place in the conference, but are just behind second place Coffeyville (6-2).

The Lady Tigers are out-scoring opponents by an average of 34 points per game during their four-game winning streak.

Cowley out-scored Allen 56-4 on points off turnovers as they forced the Lady Red Devils into 41 turnovers.

Freshman Ryley Beard came off the bench to lead all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Beard also had seven of Cowley's 30 steals. Freshman Shamara Henderson also played well and filled up the stat sheet, finishing with 10 points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds.

"Riley and Shamara are starting to figure it out defensively," Clark said.

With Cowley in complete control, every player on the roster saw action except for injured sophomores Milena Fromming and Shontrice Austin. Freshman Lucy Lally from Sedan took advantage of the playing time and finished with a season-high nine points and five rebounds in 13 minutes of action.

Cowley will look to continue its climb up the conference standings when they play at Coffeyville Saturday at 5 p.m. The Lady Red Ravens (7-2) are led by post player Faith Simpson, who averages 16.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.

"Coffeyville is always a tough place to play," Clark said. "We will need to lock in on Faith Simpson."
