Balanced attack leads Coffeyville past Lady Tigers

Heading into its game at Coffeyville Community College on Saturday, the Cowley College women's basketball team knew it would have to try to contain Lady Red Raven post player Faith Simpson. Unfortunately, Simpson had plenty of help as she was one of five Coffeyville players to score in double figures in the Lady Red Ravens' 82-68 win.

The loss snapped Cowley's four-game winning streak and dropped the Lady Tigers' record to 9-5 overall and 7-5 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Coffeyville (8-2), winners of five games in a row, remains in second place in the conference with a record of 7-2.

On Saturday, Cowley found themselves trailing 22-14 at the end of the first quarter and 36-27 following Lady Red Raven Martina Aeschliman's basket just before the halftime buzzer.

Cowley would score the first five points of the second half to pull within 36-32, but Coffeyville answered with a 13-0 run to lead 49-32.

Trailing 61-45 entering the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers would cut its deficit to 66-56 following a layup by sophomore Kalyne Daniels with 6:16 left to play. However, that would be as close at Cowley would get as Coffeyville held on for the 14-point win.

"We got dominated," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "They led from start to finish and I did not feel we really competed."

Daniels led Cowley with 18 points and eight rebounds as she was the lone Lady Tiger to score in double figures. Cowley would shoot only 28.7 percent from the floor and 12.9 percent (4-of-31) from three-point range.

Paige Scott led Coffeyville with 18 points, while Simpson added 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Tigers will face another stiff challenge when they return home to play unbeaten Butler Community College Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The No. 9-ranked Lady Grizzlies are 12-0 overall and 11-0 in the Jayhawk East.

"We have to play a lot better than we did on Saturday if we want a chance to win," Clark said.
