Lady Tigers cruise to 74-51 win at Northwest Kansas Tech

The Cowley College women's basketball team had four players score in double figures and never trailed in a 74-51 win at Northwest Kansas Tech Wednesday in Goodland, KS.

Cowley scored the first seven points of Wednesday's game and led 25-10 at the end of the first quarter. Sophomore Martyna Kowalska, who is averaging a double-double on the season, scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds in the opening quarter.

"That first quarter was huge for us," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "We struggled early our last time out at Barton, so it was critical for us to get off to a good start. I thought Martyna was really good around the basket for us in the early going."

After leading 32-17 early in the second quarter, the Mavericks would pull within 32-23 following a basket by Alonna Harvey-Williams with just under four minutes left in the first half. However, Cowley would close the half on a 7-1 run to lead 39-24.

Cowley's lead would grow to 59-40 after three quarters of play and the Lady Tigers would score the first 10 points of the fourth quarter as they completed the season sweep of the Mavericks.

"We are starting to get a little better playing on the road," Clark said.

Cowley shot 49.1 percent from the floor and made 17-of-19 free-throw attempts, while holding the Lady Mavericks to 31.7 percent shooting from the floor.

The victory was an important one for the Lady Tigers as Cowley (12-7) moves within a half game of fourth place in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 8-6. Northwest Kansas Tech is now 3-16 overall and 1-14 in the conference.

Baylee Fincher made 7-of-10 shots from the floor and went 5-of-6 from the foul line as she finished with a game-high 20 points.

"Baylee was very active and shot it at a high-rate," Clark said.

Kowalska also played well and finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Moniek Meeringa was the lone player to score in double figures for Northwest Kansas Tech as she finished with 17 points.

Cowley will host Hutchinson Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Blue Dragons are 18-4 overall and second in the conference with a record of 12-4. Cowley lost the first meeting between the teams, 63-53 December 1 in Hutchinson.

"We will have our hands full because Hutchinson is really good," Clark said. "We hope to pay them back on Saturday."
