Lady Tigers cruise to 84-28 season-opening win

Holding the Kansas Wesleyan University JV to 16.7 percent shooting, the Cowley College women's basketball team opened the season with an easy 84-28 win Tuesday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.

Cowley (1-0) had 11 players score as everyone on the roster saw playing time in the victory.

"It is always nice to start good and play well," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "We pressured the ball well and did some nice things defensively."

Super sophomore Baylee Fincher scored 13 first-quarter points as Cowley used a 13-0 run to close the quarter with a 27-8 lead. The Lady Tigers would out-score the Lady Coyotes 40-2 during one stretch as they held a commanding 56-11 halftime advantage.

With the game comfortably in hand, Clark was able to empty his bench in the second half.

Fincher finished 4-of-6 from three-point range and led all scorers with 19 points in 22 minutes of action. Freshman point guard Gracie Gilpin added 11 points in her debut, while sophomore Carson Dean chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Sophomore Jana Radovanovic also made the most of her 15 minutes of playing time as she finished with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

"Jana has been more aggressive and is doing better," Clark said.

Freshman Stasia Duque also played well and added nine points in eight minutes as the bench contributed 33 points.

"We have high expectations for the freshmen and liked their aggressiveness," Clark said.

Adriana DiPrima led Kansas Wesleyan with nine points as the Coyotes shot just 10-60 from the floor.

Cowley will remain home to face the Tabor College JV Friday at 5:30 p.m. before hosting Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Saturday at 5:30.

"We will continue working to get better and take it one day at a time," Clark said.
