Lady Tigers avenge lone defeat with 73-65 road win

Four days after suffering a 76-69 home loss against the Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Lady Mavericks, the Cowley College women's basketball team enacted revenge with a 73-65 victory Wednesday in Tonkawa, OK.

Cowley raced out to a 20-8 lead after one-quarter of play and led by as many as 19 points (36-17) before settling for a 36-23 halftime lead.

The Mavericks pulled within 55-44 after three-quarters of play and trailed only 63-58 following a basket by Jordan Holman with 3:12 left to play. Lady Tiger sophomore Shamahra Henderson answered with a driving layup on the ensuing possession, and Cowley held on for the eight-point win.

Lady Tiger sophomore Baylee Fincher went 8-of-9 from the floor and finished with a team-high 22 points, while freshman Brooke Perez added her first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

"Baylee was really aggressive and carried us on offense for a while," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "Brooke was also huge on the boards and played really well defensively."

Holman, who had 33 points and 16 rebounds in Saturday's game, was held to 23 points and 10 boards in Wednesday's contest.

"Shamahra did a great job on Holman, and Stasia (Duque) also came off the bench to limit her," Clark said.

Duque finished with nine points in 15 minutes as Cowley shot a season-high 60.5 percent from the floor.

Cowley improves its record to 3-1 on the season, while NOC falls to 2-3.

The Lady Tigers will return home for a pair of games, beginning with Friday's contest against the Friends University JV at 5:30 p.m. Cowley will then face the Bethany College JV Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
