Lady Tigers can’t slow down Indy in 91-65 road loss

The Cowley College women's basketball team fell behind early in its game at Independence on Wednesday and could not recover in the 91-65 road defeat.

The Lady Pirates used a 20-4 run to lead 23-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Tigers would pull within 24-15 after a basket by freshman Brooke Perez before going into halftime trailing 36-23.

With Indy leading 43-30 three minutes into the third quarter, the Lady Pirates scored 12 straight points and went on to the 26-point win.

"We got down early and were never really competitive," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

The Lady Pirates' Blesseth Dillingham, Merveille Nkoyock, and Suni Kartik combined to go 9-of-14 from three-point range as Indy made 12 three-pointers in the victory. The Lady Pirates are now 7-6 overall and 3-4 in the Jayhawk Conference.

Freshman Stacia Duque came off the bench to lead Cowley with a career-high 15 points and nine rebounds, while Baylee Fincher and Gracie Gilpin added 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Cowley, which had its two-game winning streak come to a halt, is now 7-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The Lady Tigers will now prepare to host Seward County (5-4) Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lady Saints are tied for second in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 5-2.

"I hope we show up ready to play because Seward is really good," Clark said.
