Lady Tigers run away from Northwest Tech in 85-62 home win

Leading Northwest Kansas Tech just 55-50 after three-quarters of play in its conference opener played Saturday afternoon inside W.S. Scott Auditorium, the Cowley College women's basketball team out-scored the Mavericks 30-12 in the fourth quarter of its 85-62 win.

The victory keeps Cowley unbeaten on the season, as the Lady Tigers are now 7-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. NW Tech is now 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

On Saturday, Cowley got 11 first-quarter points from sophomore Ndack Mbengue and shot 68.8 percent from the floor in opening a 23-11 first-quarter lead.

With Mbengue and fellow post player Anna Przyszlak combining for 24 points and 10 rebounds, Cowley would take a 39-29 lead into halftime.

The Lady Mavericks chipped away at their deficit and trailed only 55-50 after Alexandria Thompson's three-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer.

However, Cowley scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter and out-scored the Mavericks 30-12 over the final 10 minutes as they went on to the 23-point victory. The Lady Tigers shot 64.7 percent in the fourth quarter and 50.7 percent for the game, while the Mavericks shot only 27.8 percent in the final quarter.

"I thought we were pretty solid defensively the second half," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "We created some turnovers in that fourth quarter that helped us stretch the lead."

Przyszlak led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, while Mbengue had a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

"Those two were strong and played aggressively," Clark said.

Freshman guard Hattie Pyle filled up the stat sheet, finishing with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, five steals and two blocked shots.

"Hattie seemed to be everywhere on the floor," Clark said.

Sy Crowley and Serena Lee had 19 points apiece for Northwest Kansas Tech.

Cowley will attempt to remain unbeaten when they play at Seward County on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Seward is 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

"Seward is a tough place to play; we will need to be ready to play on Tuesday," Clark said.
