No. 19-ranked Tiger wrestling team slips past 18th-ranked Neosho 22-21

Improving to 3-0 in duals, the No. 19-ranked Cowley College wrestling team won four of its final six matches to pull out a 22-21 win over 18th-ranked Neosho County Wednesday in Chanute, KS.

"We knew going in that Neosho had a good team and that it would be a close dual," Cowley head coach Beau Vest said. "I am glad we got out of there with a win."

After losing the first match at the 125-pound weight class, Tiger sophomore Austin Kincaid trailed his 133-pound match against Neosho County's Kolton Smith by a score of 6-0 before pinning Smith in the second period.

"Austin coming from behind to win was the difference in the match," Vest said.

Cowley sophomore Liam Corbett picked up an important 8-4 decision over returning All-American Dallas Boone at 157 points, while Garrett Lange (165 pounds) and Ottis Peeler (184 pounds) won by tech fall.

"Ottis Peeler and Garrett Lange did what they needed to in earning bonus points," Vest said.

However, Cowley still trailed 21-19 heading into the final match. Needing to win, sophomore Tyler Shannon defeated Neosho County's Brandon Barrager 3-0 in the 285-pound weight class. The victory allowed Cowley to slip past the Panthers 22-21.

"Tyler wrestled a smart match to secure the win for us," Vest said.

Cowley will next wrestle at Pratt Community College Wednesday, January 29 at 7 p.m.

"Pratt has a talented group of young guys, so I expect another close dual," Vest said. "Our guys have been working hard and will use this match against Pratt as another step towards nationals. We want to continue having a solid team effort."
