Tiger wrestlers open season at Falcon Invite at Hartman Arena

The No. 8-ranked Cowley College wrestling team got off to a good start to the 2021-2022 season by taking part in the Falcon Invite held Saturday at Wichita's Hartman Arena.

"All in all, it was a great tournament to start with," Cowley head coach Beau Vest said. "The guys wrestled pretty well and I thought the returners picked up where we left off. We won several matches late in the match, which is a good sign early in the season."

Cowley had 17 wrestlers go head-to-head against 39 NAIA and junior college programs at the Falcon Invite. The Tigers were led by Brandon Kidd (149 pounds) and Montez Robinson (157 pounds) placing second in their respective weight classes.

"Montez wrestled really well. I also thought Brandon was aggressive and offensive, which led to him getting a lot of bonus point wins," Vest said.

Freshman heavyweight Dean Setticase also wrestled well and placed third.

"I was impressed with some of the things he was able to do," Vest said.

Sophomore Alex Rodriguez was the Tigers' fourth placer as he went 4-2 and placed fourth in the 157-pound weight class.

The Tiger wrestling team will now prepare to take part in the Grandview Open Saturday at 9 a.m. in Des Moines, IA.

"Grandview will be a huge test for us as we will see several highly ranked junior college programs," Vest said. "It will be good to see where we are at with things following this competition."

Following the Grandview Open, Cowley will return home to challenge Friends University in a dual on Tuesday, November 16 at 7 p.m.

*149 pounds – Brandon Kidd went 4-1 and placed second.

*157 pounds – Montez Robinson went 4-1 and placed second.

*157 pounds – Alex Rodriguez went 4-2 and placed fourth.

*157 pounds – Daniel Camilo-Ferreira went 2-3.

*165 pounds – Josh Kime went 3-2.

*174 pounds – Mouhamadou Sene went 0-2.

*184 pounds – Ryan Locke went 2-2.

*184 pounds – Benny Madrid Jr. went 2-1.

*197 pounds – Dalton Collins went 1-2.

*197 pounds – Austin Peri went 0-2.

*285 pounds – Dean Setticase went 4-1 and placed third.
