Lady Tiger soccer team drops season-opener to Kansas City

Playing its first game in nearly 18 months, the No. 11-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team had a pair of mistakes prove to be costly in a 2-1 home loss to Kansas City Kansas Community College Friday in Arkansas City.

The Lady Blue Devils jumped out to the early lead when Madison Broeker scored off a Tiger miscue only six minutes into the game. Kansas City's lead would grow to 2-0 following a goal by Caroline Rutledge with 23:14 left in the first half.

Cowley would pull within 2-1 when sophomore Leticia Belloni scored the Lady Tigers' first goal of the season with 34 minutes left to play.

Cowley would continue to put pressure on the Blue Devils' defense, but were unable to come away with the game-tying goal.

"We had a couple mistakes hurt us," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "We kept attacking and pressing in the second half, but were not able to get the goal we needed."

Cowley will remain home to face Garden City Monday at 4 p.m. at the Lady Tiger Soccer Field. The Lady Broncbusters are 1-0 on the season following a 1-0 win over Neosho.

"We have worked on making some adjustments following the Kansas City game and hope to get back on track," Dos Santos said.
