Big first half lifts Lady Tiger soccer team to 5-1 win

The No. 19-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team equaled the amount of goals they had scored on the season in the first half of its game against Johnson County Sunday in Arkansas City. After scoring five goals through the first three games, the Lady Tigers scored five goals in 44 minutes of Sunday's game as they defeated the Lady Cavaliers 5-1.

"The group is finally coming together as a team, girls are understanding our weaknesses and strengths," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "Against Johnson, our girls knew we had to impose our game and they did just that, from start to end. I am so happy for them, they have been working hard."

After scoring 18 goals as a freshman and earning All-American honors, Natalia Lima tallied her first goal of the season five minutes into Sunday's game. Lima would add a second goal just before halftime as Cowley went into the half with a 5-1 lead.

"Natalia works so hard, the entire team is happy for her," Dos Santos said. "We know what she's capable of and are happy that she got this pressure off herself."

The Lady Tigers would also get a pair of goals from Sofia Gill and one from Corbin Goodson as they improved to 3-1 on the season.

Johnson County's lone goal came when Gail Logan scored on a penalty kick. The Lady Cavaliers are now 2-1 on the season.

Cowley will look to make it four wins in a row when they host Hutchinson Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Arkansas City High School soccer field. The Lady Blue Dragons are 2-1-1 on the season.

"There is no easy game in this conference, especially against Hutch," Dos Santos said. "It will be another battle, they will come ready to fight."
