Lady Tiger soccer team battles to 1-1 tie with Hutchinson

The No. 19-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team jumped out to an early lead against Hutchinson Community College Wednesday at home before the Blue Dragons tied the game at 1-1. The score would remain that way through regulation and both overtimes as the game ended in a tie.

The tie snaps Cowley's three-game winning streak and makes the Lady Tigers 3-1-1 on the season. Hutchinson is now 2-1-2.

It did not take long for Cowley to grab the lead in Wednesday's game as Harlie Findley made a beautiful pass, from just inside Hutchinson territory, to Natalia Lima, who shielded off the Blue Dragon defender to gain control of the ball inside the box and sent a shot past Hutchinson goalkeeper Kambrian Colburn to put Cowley ahead 1-0 with 36:35 remaining in the opening half.

However, a tripping penalty called on the Lady Tigers allowed Amy Mayer to score on a penalty kick with 18:48 left in the first half.

Both teams had opportunities to win in the first and second overtime, but neither team could find the back of the net. The game ended with the ball rolling just wide of the Lady Tiger goal following a free kick by Hutchinson in the closing seconds.

"Hutch plays a very physical game. They came ready to match our speed and stop our penetrations," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "We were able to contain their game by stepping up quickly on defense and not allow them to possess the ball. It was a good match up. I am proud of how the girls fought all the way through."

Lady Tiger goalkeeper Makayla Farquharson made four saves in the tie.

Cowley will have a week off before hosting Barton Community College Wednesday, April 21 at 5:30 p.m. The Cougars are 4-0-1 on the season.

"We have got one week for recovery and rehab," Dos Santos said. "Hopefully we will have everyone healthy and ready. Barton has a good squad and will come in ready to battle."
