Lady Tiger soccer team rallies for 2-1 road win

The No. 12-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team rallied from an early deficit in its game at Coffeyville on Saturday to defeat the Lady Red Ravens 2-1. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Lady Tigers.

On Saturday, Coffeyville grabbed an early 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Louise Atkinson only eight minutes into the contest. However, Cowley would tie the game at 1-1 when Natalia Lima scored off an assist from Elsa Pelicant with nine minutes left in the first half. The goal was the fifth in the last three games for Lima and ninth overall.

With two minutes left before halftime, Cowley sophomore Manuela Oliveira scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal on a beautifully executed free-kick . The goal was the fifth of the season for Oliveira.

Cowley would control the game in the second half as goalkeeper Makayla Farquharson did not face a shot on goal over the final 82 minutes of play.

"After our lone mishap on the goal Coffeyville scored we got back to playing our game," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "We did a good job in the second half of handling the adversity of playing against the wind."

Cowley improves its record to 10-1-1 on the season. The loss snapped Coffeyville's three-game winning streak and drops the Lady Red Ravens to 7-4 overall.

The Lady Tigers will wrap up the regular season by playing at Barton Saturday at 2 p.m. The Cougars are second in the conference with a record of 8-3-1 and battled Cowley hard before losing 1-0 April 21 in Arkansas City.

"We do not want to lose," Dos Santos said. "We want to keep up our intensity and be ready for the playoffs."
