Lady Tiger soccer pulls out 1-0 win in season-opener

The No. 14-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team got a goal from freshman Lucia Rivas midway through the first half and made the lead stand up as they defeated Eastern Oklahoma State College 1-0 in its season-opening game played Sunday in Arkansas City.

Cowley was playing Sunday's game short-handed as they had players missing due to illness and eligibility questions. However, the Lady Tigers did enough good things to come away with the victory.

"It's always important to begin the season with a win," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "We have got the talented pieces and lots of young players that were a little anxious to make things happen. However, they were committed and hungry to get a win."

With the team's top-two goalkeepers unable to suit up on Sunday, Cowley turned to freshman midfielder Sara Espinoza to start in goal. Cowley did a good job of controlling the game as Espinoza did not have to thwart too many scoring opportunities by the Mountaineers.

With the game scoreless for the first 25 minutes, freshman Lucia Rivas stole the ball from an Eastern Oklahoma defender and scored the game's lone goal.

"I am very proud of the entire team on how they embraced the challenge we faced before the game," Dos Santos said. "Sara stepped in as goalkeeper and did a phenomenal job."

The Lady Tigers will face another challenge on Wednesday when they host No. 19-ranked Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa at 5 p.m.
