Rivas’ goal lifts Lady Tigers past Garden City 3-2

After alternating goals in its game at Garden City on Wednesday, the Cowley College women's soccer team got the go-ahead goal from Lucia Rivas in the 62nd minute and held on to defeat the Broncbusters 3-2.

Cowley out-shot Garden City 25-5 but could not pull away before Rivas' blasted home her third goal of the season from 15 yards out.

"After a long trip, the girls were intense and controlled the match," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "We allowed them two opportunities, and they capitalized, but we kept the fight and were able to come away with a win."

Lady Tiger sophomore Esther Atwood got the scoring started by netting her first goal of the season 18 minutes into Wednesday's contest. However, less than two minutes later, Garden City would tie the game on a goal by Carys Grieve.

Lea Evin's third goal of the season, 16 minutes before halftime, gave Cowley a 2-1 advantage.

The score would remain that way until Hannah Duncan knotted things at 2-2 10 minutes into the second half.

Rivas' goal, eight minutes later, would prove to be the difference in the match as sophomore goalkeeper Alba Lopez made three saves and helped preserve the win.

Cowley is now 7-4 overall and 4-4 in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division. Garden City (4-8-1) remains in last place in the conference with a record of 0-7-1.

Cowley will have some time off before hosting 12th-ranked Barton County Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Lady Tigers lost at Barton 5-3 back on September 14.

"Barton, as usual, will be an intense match; we need to regroup and focus on the upcoming game," dos Santos said.
