Lady Tiger soccer team blanks fourth straight opponent

After shutting out just one of its first seven opponents, the No. 16-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team ran its streak of shutouts to four in a row in a 4-0 victory at Dodge City on Saturday.

Cowley is now 7-1-3 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. They remain in fourth place in the conference, just three points back of conference-leading Hutchinson.

The Lady Tigers improved its record to 4-0-2 on the road while holding Dodge City without a shot on goal.

"This was a big road win because Dodge City is a tough team and tied us earlier in the season at our place," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "I am happy with how our girls have been consistent with their intensity."

Lucia Rivas got the scoring started on Saturday as she scored off an assist from Nanaka Inaba 15 minutes into the game. Just 45 seconds later, Berta Borrell scored an unassisted goal to increase Cowley's lead to 2-0.

Inaba would score Cowley's third goal of the opening half when she scored off an assist from Nella Nevalainen with 15 minutes left before halftime.

In control of the game, Rivas would cap the scoring 10 minutes into the second half, scoring her second goal off an assist from Himari Soto. Rivas now leads the Lady Tigers with five goals on the season.

"I am happy for Lucia. Those two goals were big for us," dos Santos said.

Cowley has allowed only 12 goals in 11 games and will return home to face Butler Community College on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Lady Tigers defeated Butler (5-5-5) 4-3 on September 9 in Arkansas City.

"Our defense is taking pride in not letting balls get through," dos Santos said. "We cannot underestimate Butler because they are a dangerous team. We will need to keep our focus and intensity."
