Lady Tigers continue winning ways with 4-0 victory over Dodge City
The No. 11-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team won its fourth game in a row with a 4-0 victory over Dodge City Wednesday in Arkansas City.
Cowley is now 8-2-1 in the Jayhawk Conference, trailing only Butler (9-1-1) and Kansas City (8-0-3). On the flip side, Dodge City (3-8-2) has lost four in a row to fall to 3-7-2 in the conference.
On Wednesday, Cowley got first-half goals from Evelyn Borges and Anna Linsler to lead 2-0. Hina Suzuki, the reigning Player of the Week in the Jayhawk Conference, assisted both goals.
"I was pleased with how the girls applied the game plan early on and did what we discussed," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said.
Suzuki would add her conference-leading 13th goal with 28:49 left to play when she rocketed home a shot from 25 yards out.
With the game winding down, L:ady Tiger freshman Gracia Barnett got in on the fun by scoring her first goal of the season.
"I am really happy for Gracia," dos Santos said. "We always say it's not how much you play; it's how much you put into it when you get the opportunity."
Borges and Himari Sato assisted on the second-half goals as Cowley improved to 6-0-1 in its past seven contests.
Making her second straight start in goal for the injured Marin Peoples, freshman Emma Shockley stopped all three shots she faced to record her first collegiate shutout.
The Lady Tigers will now prepare for one of its toughest tests of the season when they play at conference-leading Butler Community College on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Grizzlies (9-1-4) are ranked eighth nationally and are 9-1-2 in the conference.
"This is a huge game for us and is crucial to our goal of winning the conference," dos Santos said. "We need to regroup and find a way to steal a win on Saturday."
