No. 15-ranked Lady Tiger soccer team suffers 2-0 loss at Barton County
With the regular season winding down, the effects of a long season are starting to show for the No. 15-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team. On Saturday, the Lady Tigers were shut out for the second time in the past three games in a 2-0 loss at Barton County.
Cowley is now in fourth place in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 9-4-1. Barton County (8-5-3) remains in fifth place with a record of 6-5-3.
On Saturday, Barton scored goals towards the end of each half and out-shot Cowley 13-9.
The Cougars benefited from an own goal by Cowley with only 2:38 left to play in the first half.
Despite having the wind advantage in the second half, the lone goal over the final 45 minutes of play came when Barton's Katie Potter sent a shot over Lady Tiger goalkeeper Marin People's head with 1:01 remaining as the Lady Cougars came away with the 2-0 victory.
"Saturday's game was not our best," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "We opened against the wind, which forced us to play more defensively in the first half. In the second half, we had some more opportunities playing with the wind, but we were unable to capitalize."
Cowley will return home to face unbeaten and No. 7-ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College (11-0-5) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the team's final regular season home contest. The teams battled to a 1-1 tie on September 21 in Kansas City, KS.
"Both teams want to win, so it will be another tough game," dos Santos said. "We want to finish well in the conference standings."
