Lady Tiger soccer team falls to 8th-ranked KCK 3-1

The No. 19-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 home loss against No. 8-ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College on Wednesday in Arkansas City, KS.

Cowley is now 9-5-1 overall and in the conference. Following a seven-game unbeaten streak, the Lady Tigers have dropped three of its past four contests.

Kansas City is 12-0-5 overall and atop the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 10-0-5.

Before the game, Cowley's sophomores were honored.

Once the game began, the Lady Blue Devils started fast as they got a goal from freshman Kiara Carr to lead 1-0 in just over four minutes of play.

Cowley would answer back and tie the game at 1-1 on a goal from sophomore Hina Suzuki with 24:28 remaining in the opening half. The goal by Suzuki was her team-leading 15th of the season.

The score would remain tied before Kansas City freshman Cora Ellermann headed in a perfectly executed crossing pass from Sierra Montez to go back in front 2-1 with 6:38 left in the first half.

Midway through the second half, Kansas City would add to its lead when Jaycee Schumann scored to make it 3-1.

Both teams had opportunities to score thwarted over the final 22 minutes as Kansas City held on for the 3-1 win.

Cowley sophomore goalkeeper Marin People had seven saves in the loss, while Lady Blue Devil goalkeeper Maria Heuman stopped six of the seven shots she faced.

Cowley will wrap up the regular season by playing at Hutchinson (9-2-5) on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Lady Tigers defeated Hutchinson 3-0 on September 25 in Ark City.
