Daytona State defeats Lady Tiger soccer team 5-2 to advance out of Pool B

Playing on a rainy overcast day, the No. 11-seed Cowley College women's soccer team lost to seventh-seed Daytona State College (FL) by a sore of 5-2 Monday afternoon at the NJCAA Division I National Soccer Championships played at the SCHEELS Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, KS.

The Lady Tigers are now 11-6-3 on the season, while Daytona State College improves to 16-3. The Falcons previously defeated Seminole State on Sunday and advance out of Pool B with a 2-0 record.

On Monday, the Falcons' Valeria Vasquez scored the game's first goal 12 minutes into the contest.

Cowley nearly answered with one minute left in the first half as Anna Linsler rocketed a shot just over the goal.

With goals hard to come by, Daytona State took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The majority of the second half was played in a driving rain making the conditions tough for both teams. However, the scoring started to pick up as Daytona State's Shanell Buckley increased the Falcons' lead to 2-0 as she scored off an assist from Madison Gellner only four minutes into the second half.

The Lady Tigers answered back only 13 seconds later when Manuela Gorny scored to cut Cowley's deficit to 2-1.

Once again, Daytona State responded as Buckley scored her second goal off another assist from Gellner to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead with 36:04 left to play..

The Lady Tigers would not quit as they pulled within 3-2 on a goal by Linsler with 14:27 remaining. The goal by Linsler was assisted on by Hina Suzuki.

Unfortunately, the Falcons had another answer as Alyse Then scored off an assist from Buckley to give Daytona State a 4-2 lead with 11:48 remaining. The Falcons were not done there. Sienna Gillespie capped the scoring by heading in an assist from Sophia Varga with 5:42 left to play.

Cowley cannot play for the title but will instead play its final game of the season  on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. when they face second-seed Seminole State College (18-1-2).
