Matthews and Burns capture doubles championship at NAITA
After recently helping the Cowley College women's tennis team to its first-ever national championship and the Tiger men's team to a national runner-up finish, assistant coach Brady Matthews teamed with former Tiger tennis player Chris Burns to win the doubles title at the NAITA (North American Indian Tennis Association) Tournament held Memorial weekend in Edmond, OK.
This was the 49th year of the Tournament, which was held at the Edmond Center Court. Native Americans from all over the nation come to play in the NAITA Tournament.
Matthews and Burns won their first round match by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. The pair were down 3-7 in super tie-breaker before coming back to win 10-8. The duo then won 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 to advance to the championship match.
Playing in the finals, Matthews and Burns won 6-3, 6-2 to become the Men's National Doubles Champions.
"This was an amazing weekend," Matthews said. "I am really happy with our end results. The first two matches we definitely didn't make it easy for ourselves but I am really glad to have shared this experience with my friend Chris."
