Lady Tigers place sixth, men 8th at Friends Spring Open

Continuing to increase its number of participants at each meet, the nationally ranked Cowley College men and women's track and field teams competed at the Friends University Spring Open Friday and Saturday in Wichita, KS.

Once again, Cowley's throwers continued to shine. Men's hammer throwers Simeon Faagai and Treavor Green ended the day with new personal bests, while freshman Jaden Schneeberger placed fourth in the hammer throw with a national qualifying mark of 163-5. Abner Johnson and Ahmed Brown also shined in the shot put, placing third and fifth, respectively, with national qualifying marks.

The Lady Tiger throwers were just as impressive with Kayla McClellan, Chloe Wilson and Alejandra Handie each placing in the top-10 in the hammer throw. Freshman Bernesha "Shelby" Knowles of the Bahamas also achieved a new personal best while hitting the national qualifying mark in the discus.

"Coach (Glenwood) Edwards has got the throws' teams rolling," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "It seems every time out we set personal records and national qualifying marks."

Cloud County placed first in both the men and women's competition. There were 24 men's teams and 27 women's squad at the meet. Although, the emphasis of the meet was to show improvement and not necessarily to win it, Cowley still managed to place sixth on the women's side and eighth on the men's side in the team standings.

"We just try to keep making strides forward and get more race experience," Rieth said.

Cowley will compete Wednesday through Saturday at the Wichita State University KT Woodman Classic.

"We hope to get after it this weekend and get a few more national qualifiers," Rieth said.
