Kansas City hands Lady Tiger volleyball team third straight loss

The Cowley College volleyball team got off to a good start in its home match against Kansas City Kansas Community College Monday in Arkansas City as they won the first set 25-23. However, the Lady Blue Devils would win the next three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-17 to send the Lady Tigers to their third straight defeat.

The loss was the first of the season in three home matches for Cowley, which is now 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. With the victory, Kansas City improves to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

"KCK made a few changes after that first set and we didn't limit our unforced errors to stop their runs," Cowley head coach Steven Gream said.

Cowley rallied from a 17-13 deficit in the opening set to win 25-23. But, Kansas City came out aggressive in set two and let 17-10 before taking the set 25-22.

Set three saw the Lady Tigers' lead 13-10 before Kansas City rallied to go in front 16-15 and never look back in the 25-22 win.

After Cowley scored the first two points of set four, the Lady Blue Devils would score 15 of the next 20 points and cruised to the 25-17 victory.

Freshman outside hitter Macy Shreffler led Cowley with 17 kills, while Iva Halacheva and Maddy Pitts added 16 and nine kills, respectively. Freshman setter Gracie Story led the team with 41 assists.

The Lady Tigers will look to get back in the win column when they play at winless Hesston College Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Larks are 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the Jayhawk East.

"We need to build our confidence by executing our game and get back on the right track," Gream said. "We need to focus more on what we are doing and not so much our opponent and try to clean up our side of the court."
