Cowley volleyball puts it all together in third straight win

Showing the improvement, they have made over the past month, the Cowley College volleyball team avenged an early season loss to Cloud County by defeating the T-Birds in straight sets Monday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.

After losing at Cloud County in four sets back on February 1, the Lady Tigers played perhaps their best match of the season in the 25-13, 25-13, 25-22 win on Monday.

"Our defense did a great job of getting us balls to put away," Cowley head coach Steven Gream said. "We also put pressure on them with our serve and defense."

Cowley, winners of three matches in a row, is now 8-7 overall and 5-7 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.

On Monday, Cowley raced out to a 10-2 lead and were never threatened in the 25-13 win of set one.

The second set was back and forth with Cloud clinging to an 11-10 lead midway through the set. However, Cowley would score 10 straight points to lead 20-11 and did not look back in another 25-13 win.

The Lady Tigers appeared to be in complete control of the third set as they again led 10-2. However, this time Cloud would rally to lead 20-18 before Cowley regrouped to pull off the 25-22 win.

Sophomore Iva Halacheva continued her solid play by leading Cowley with 18 kills and a .438 hitting percentage. Freshman Maddy Pitts added nine kills and hit .533, while Erin Thompson had 15 digs.

"Having a balanced attack allows our hitters to get better swings," Gream said.

Cowley will remain home to face Neosho County Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Panthers (8-3) are currently third in the Jayhawk East with a record of 7-2. Johnson County (7-1) and Highland (6-1) remain atop the conference standings. The Lady Tigers will again look to avenge an early season defeat against the Panthers.

"Neosho is a scrappy, high-energy team," Gream said. "We look forward to the challenge and hope to play better than we did the first time we faced them."
