Cowley volleyball team snaps skid against Coffeyville

The Cowley College volleyball team used a solid offensive attack to defeat Coffeyville Community College 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 Saturday afternoon inside W.S. Scott Auditorium. The Lady Tigers had lost seven straight matches against Coffeyville dating back to the 2015 season.

"We cleaned up our errors and played better defense than we did in our last match against Kansas City," Cowley head coach Steven Gream said.

Cowley, winners of six of its past seven matches, is now 11-8 overall and 7-8 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Coffeyville falls to 8-6 overall and 6-5 in the Jayhawk East.

Iva Halacheva led Cowley with 17 kills, 10 digs and a .520 hitting percentage. Halacheva moved into sixth place on Cowley's career kills list with 808.

"They did not have an answer for Iva," Gream said.

Freshman setter Gracie Story also played well and finished with 32 assists and seven digs as the Lady Tigers' out-hit Coffeyville .349 to .202.

"Our defense allowed us to get more swings, and we found holes in their defense," Gream said.

Hannah Armstrong led Coffeyville with 10 kills. The Lady Red Ravens remain just ahead of Cowley for sixth place in the Jayhawk East.

Cowley will host a pair of matches on Monday. The Lady Tigers will face Hesston College (0-20) at 4 p.m. and the Friends University JV at 8. The Lady Tiger sophomores will be honored prior to the match against Friends.

"We need to continue to worry about us and our side of the court," Gream said.
