Volleyball still yet to drop a set after four more wins

The No. 2-ranked Cowley College volleyball team made easy work of its latest four opponents as they continue to remain unbeaten on the season. The Lady Tigers won all four matches at the Kansas City Kansas Tournament on Friday and Saturday before winning 25-10, 25-8, 25-6 Monday night at Hesston College.

The Lady Tigers, which are 17-0 on the season and 5-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, have yet to drop a set this season.

On Friday, Cowley defeated Southeast Community College 25-7, 25-19, 25-19, before defeating Metropolitan Community College 25-17, 25-13, 25-11.

Cowley returned to the court on Saturday and defeated Central Nebraska 25-10, 25-15, 25-15, before capping the weekend with a 25-11, 25-20, 25-11 victory over Northeast Community College.

"It was good for us to be able to work on things while playing some teams we have yet to play this year," Cowley head coach Steven Gream said.

In the win over Central Nebraska, sophomore Iva Halacheva broke Milica Kusmuk's school-record for kills in a career. Halacheva, who had 32 kills in the three wins at the KCK Tourney, broke Kusmuk's record of 1,182 career kills.

"Cowley has a great tradition of hitters, so for Iva to hold this record is incredible," Gream said. "She is always willing to do what the team needs and I am glad to see her hard work pay off."

Freshman Laci Beougher also played well as she led Cowley with 37 kills at the KCK Tourney and added 10 kills in the win over Hesston.

"Laci and all the girls did well in these matches and contributed to the wins," Gream said.

Freshman setter Rossana Papa had five of Cowley's 14 service aces in the win over Hesston, while Halacheva led Cowley with 13 kills in the win over the Lady Larks and now has 1,215 career kills.

Cowley will look to remain unbeaten when they host Fort Scott Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Greyhounds are 6-9 overall and 0-2 in the Jayhawk East.

"Fort Scott is very scrappy and beat us twice last year," Gream said. "They will push us, so we need to be prepared for a battle."
