Lady Tigers roll to easy road win at Independence

The No. 5-ranked Cowley College volleyball team fared well in its first road contest of the season, defeating Independence Community College 25-11, 25-14, 25-10 Wednesday in Independence.

The Lady Tigers are now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, while Independence is now 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the Jayhawk East.

Cowley was never threatened in the straight-sets win.

"We came in and executed our game plan well, balanced the attack, and kept Independence on their toes with our strong serving," Cowley head coach Steven Gream said.

Lady Tiger freshman Laura Bonomi had four of Cowley's 16 service aces to go along with seven kills and 10 digs.

Sophomore Rossana Papa also played well, adding 34 assists and 10 digs.

"Ro is coming along and getting back into the swing of things," Gream said.

Sara Puskas, Anna Kiss, and Valerie Luna added 10 kills apiece.

"Valerie had an outstanding game and played much more free," Gream said. "We did a good job of spreading it around to multiple people."

The Lady Tigers hit .438 as a team.

Cowley will remain on the road to play a pair of matches Monday afternoon at the John Brown University Tri-Match in Siloam Springs, AR. The Lady Tigers will face Northeastern Oklahoma A&M at 4 p.m. before playing the John Brown University JV at 6 p.m.

"We have played in this tri-match before," Gream said. "It will allow us to work on some things before we return home to play Allen on Wednesday."
