Opening the season at Seminole State College (OK) on Wednesday, the Cowley College softball team came up on the short end of a 4-3 loss in game one and then suffered a 16-8 defeat in game two.
"Seminole is always a tough opponent and will compete with you," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "I felt like our players knew that we could compete with them but fell short of executing when needed."
The Lady Tigers (0-2) led game one by a score of 3-2 before the Trojans scratched across a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3.
After Cowley was held scoreless in the top of the seventh inning, Lady Tiger starting pitcher Mikah Vann hit the leadoff batter with a pitch to start the bottom of the seventh. After a flyout, Vann (0-1) allowed a single and a walk to load the bases with one out. Vann would then allow a run-scoring single as the Trojans rallied for the 4-3 win.
"I felt like the first game, we were sharper in the circle and on the defensive side," Hoyt said. "Offensively, we just didn't get a spark going and left too many runners on base (eight runners left on)."
Sophomore Jamie Molina, who is also a member of the women's basketball team, homered and drove in two in the defeat.
Vann allowed six hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings. The sophomore walked four and struck out two.
In game two, Cowley led 5-4 before Seminole State scored 10 runs in the bottom of the third inning and chased Lady Tiger starting pitcher Aubrey Williams from the game. Williams (0-1) allowed five hits and six walks in two-plus innings pitched. Six of the 10 runs she allowed were earned.
Madison Baker relieved Williams on the mound but did not retire any of the three batters she faced. Vann would enter in relief for Baker and allowed one earned run in two innings of work before Ezra Arredondo came on to pitch and surrendered the final run in the 16-8 run-rule defeat.
Krisyana Pellet led Cowley by going 3-for-3 at the plate, while Gracy Smith went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. Arredondo also did well, as she had three hits and scored three runs in the doubleheader.
"Game two, we hit a lot better; we just didn't play the best on the defense and pitching side," Hoyt said. We had too many walks from the circle this game. We have to shrink those down to give ourselves an opportunity for a win."
Cowley will return home to face the Friends University JV in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
