Lady Tiger tennis team tied for first place after day two of the national tourney

After receiving a bye in the first round of the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis National Championships held in Tyler, TX, the No. 2-ranked Cowley College Lady Tigers won all six singles matches and two of three doubles matches in the second round of the tournament played on Monday.

Cowley tennis players won each of their matches in straight sets and suffered its lone defeat at No. 1 singles. The Lady Tigers are currently tied with Hillsborough College and Tyler Junior College with 27 team points. St. Petersburg College (26 points) is in fourth place, while Collin College (Mo.) is in fifth place with 25 points. There are 29 teams represented at the national tournament, which runs through Wednesday.

DOUBLES

*No. 1 – Isid Hernandez/Alexandra Melnikova (CC) lost to Yeva Kononovych/Sydney Stone (Tyler JC) 2-6, 1-6.

*No. 2 – Arina Babenko/Ntokozo Zungu (CC) defeated Azul Barrios/Luciana Braga (Barton) 6-2, 6-2.

*No. 3 – Camila Neyra/Mariia Koroleva (CC) defeated Martina Paillet/Natalia Vergara (Wallace State) 6-1, 6-0.

SINGLES

*No. 1 – Melnikova (CC) defeated Larissa Correa (Collin College) 6-1, 6-3. 

*No. 2 – Babenko (CC) defeated Victoria Federova (Collin College) 6-1, 6-4.

*No. 3 – Hernandez (CC) defeated Ekaterina Orlova (Collin College) 6-4, 6-0.

*No. 4 – Zungu (CC) defeated Telma Lorenzo Herreros (Weatherford)  6-2, 6-1.

*No. 5 – Koroleva (CC) defeated Elena Baughman Saunders (State College of Florida) 6-0, 6-0.

*No. 6 – Neyra (CC) defeated Margaryta Bugaienko (Collin College) 6-0, 6-2.
