Rising up to No. 6 in the latest national rankings, the Cowley College men's soccer team knocked off No. 15-ranked Barton Community College 2-0 Wednesday in Arkansas City. The shutout was the Tigers' fourth in five games as they improve to 5-0 in the Jayhawk Conference.
Cowley got first half goals from Alexandre Picoto and Masaya Sekiguchi, both on well-executed headers in the box. Picoto headed in a perfect corner kick from Andre Cavichione, while Sekiguchi scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Luis Rodrigues.
"It was a very difficult game, Barton has so many strong and talented players, but we were able to take care of them for the most part," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said. "It wasn't our best performance but we had some decent moments. Our guys are understanding that we need to be extremely intense in the midfield for our game to work."
The Tigers have out-scored their opponents 22-1 on the season. The loss drops the Cougars' record to 4-2.
"Our back line was brilliant, another shut out, and I'm very happy with our defenders and goalkeeper. I also loved everyone's intensity on and off the field."
The Tigers will attempt to remain unbeaten when they play at Neosho County Saturday at 7 p.m. The Panthers are 4-1 on the season.
"Neosho is always difficult, they know how to keep possession of the ball and we will need to focus for 90 minutes if we want to come out with a positive result," Vaz said.
