Delgado del Castillo sets new school record at the region meet
Led by sophomore Alex Delgado del Castillo breaking the school record in the heptathlon, the Cowley College men's track and field team placed third in the conference and sixth in the region at the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Indoor Championships held on Saturday and Sunday at Pittsburg State University.
Delgado del Castillo broke the record previously held by Tiger great Nathan Vann and was also a new national qualifier in the heptathlon, as was Esteban Boisseau in the 3,000-meter run. Sophomore Ranaldo Hanna was the conference champion in the long jump.
Coffeyville was the conference champion, and the Hutchinson Community College men's track and field team made program history by securing their first conference and region titles.
"Our men gave an awesome effort but fell a little bit short," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "We typically fare better in outdoor events, so it will be interesting to watch how we respond."
Post-meet awards were collected by individuals from six different schools, as Cloud County's Abdelaziz Benbrahim was the NJCAA Region 6 Track Athlete of the Meet, while Barton's Trevon Hamer earned Region 6 Field Athlete of the Meet. NJCAA Region 6 High Point Athlete of the Meet was earned by Butler's Ishmael Acheampong, with Coffeyville head coach Robert Wood being named KJCCC Men's Head Coach of the Year and Hutchinson's Jafet Molinares earning KJCCC Men's Assistant Coach of the Year honors.
The Tiger men will now prepare for the NJCAA Division 1 National Indoor Championships held on March 7-8 in Lubbock, TX.
