Lady Tiger softball team runs win streak to 8 with lopsided wins

The Cowley College softball team picked up four lopsided home wins over the weekend to run its winning streak to eight games and move back over. 500 on the season. The Lady Tigers began with a pair of 15-1 run-rule wins over Pratt Community College on Friday before taking down Haskell College 11-3 and 10-0 on Saturday.

Cowley ran wild in Friday's opener, stealing 11 bases in the 15-1 victory. Sophomore Mya Chapman had three of the Lady Tigers' 11 stolen bases, while fellow sophomore Laramie Neff went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.

Kennedy Toothman (1-1) struck out nine while surrendering just four hits and one run over five innings pitched.

In Friday's second game, sophomore Maci Cole hit a grand slam and drove in five runs as Cowley cruised to another 15-1 win. Third baseman Kyla Bonnarens drove in four more runs as six of Cowley's 12 hits went for extra bases.

Jaala Nowlin started on the mound for Cowley and allowed only three hits and one run before Taylor Mercer finished the game by retiring all six batters she faced.

Pratt is now 1-13 on the season.

In game one against Haskell on Saturday, Cole would hit her second grand slam in as many games and the Lady Tigers scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to break open a scoreless tie. Cole now leads Cowley with seven home runs on the season.

Freshman Saige Smith (5-5) cruised through the first four frames before being chased in the fifth after allowing five baserunners and three runs. Taylor Mercer would come on to retire all four batters she faced and Cowley would score three runs in the bottom of the fifth and complete the run-rule victory on a solo home run by Emily Louderback in the sixth. Louderback and Cherokee Hibbs had two hits apiece as Cowley out-hit Haskell 11-5.

In Saturday's finale, Nowlin (4-2) spun four stellar innings allowing only one baserunner while striking out three. Kennedy Toothman would finish off the one-hit shutout by tossing a scoreless fifth inning.

Bonnarens homered and drove in four while going 3-for-3, while McKinzi Sowles went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in. Bonnarens now leads Cowley with 35 RBIs.

Cowley had 12 more hits in the nightcap as Haskell falls to 3-11.
