Lady Tiger basketball team holds off Coffeyville for 57-54 home win

Having lost at Coffeyville Community College three weeks earlier, the Cowley College women's basketball team enacted some revenge Saturday night inside W.S. Scott Auditorium by defeating the Lady Red Ravens 57-54.

In what was a close game throughout, Cowley led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter and 30-29 at halftime. The Lady Tigers would lead 43-38 entering the fourth quarter and clung to a one-point advantage following a three-pointer by Coffeyville's Paige Scott with 20.4 seconds remaining.

A pair of free throws by Cowley sophomore Seanna Boltz increased the Lady Tigers' lead to 57-54 before Coffeyville's Martina Aeschilman air-balled a potential game-tying three-point attempt with eight seconds left. Cowley's Baylee Fincher grabbed the rebound and the Lady Tigers' played keep away as time expired.

Having lost five, fourth quarter leads this season, Cowley head coach Todd Clark was happy to see his team hold on for the win.

"This was a big win for us," Clark said. "We guarded really well and were aggressive going to the basket and didn't just settle for threes."

Coffeyville's Faith Simpson, who entered the game averaging 16 points, was held to only eight points in the loss. Sophomore post player Teagan Brouwer helped neutralize Simpson and had possibly her best game this season, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds.

"Faith Simpson is a handful," Clark said. "I thought we rebounded really well and were really good defensively against her."

Rylee Beard led Cowley with 13 points, while Jayden Marlnee finished with five points and 13 rebounds.

The victory improves Cowley's record to 13-7 overall and 11-7 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Coffeyville (12-6) remains just a half game in front of the Lady Tigers for third place in the conference with a record of 11-6 in the Jayhawk East.

Cowley will next play at conference-leading Butler Community College Monday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Grizzlies are 18-1 overall and 17-1 in the Jayhawk East.

"We will have to play well in a really tough place to play," Clark said.
