Seward holds off Lady Tigers 65-58 for road win

The Seward County Saints scored the first eight points of Saturday's game at Cowley College and never trailed in the 65-58 road win.

The Lady Tigers fought back to within one point (24-23) of the lead at the end of the first half and trailed just 40-36 entering the final quarter of play. However, Seward would score the first five points of the fourth quarter to grab a double-digit lead (46-36).

Cowley would continue to battle and pulled within 60-57 following a basket by freshman N'dack Mbengue with 55.4 seconds remaining. Needing a defensive stop, Cowley was whistled for a foul, which sent D'Arrah Allen to the foul line with 45.9 seconds left. Allen, who led all scorers with 26 points, knocked down both foul shots, and Seward held on for the seven-point win.

The Saints held Cowley to 31.6 percent shooting as they improved to 6-4 overall and 6-2 in the Jayhawk Conference.

Freshman Gracie Gilpin led Cowley with 14 points. Carson Dean added 11 points and 10 rebounds but made only 4-of-15 shots from the floor as the Lady Tigers fell to 7-6 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

Cowley will look to get back on track when they play at Garden City Monday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Broncbusters (6-7) are tied with Cowley at 2-5 in the conference.
