Garden City shocks Lady Tigers with huge fourth-quarter rally

Trailing the Cowley College women's basketball team by 16 points (55-39) with five minutes left in its game on Saturday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium, the Garden City Broncbusters used a furious rally to defeat the Lady Tigers 64-59.

Garden City forced Cowley into 11 fourth-quarter turnovers, resulting in 17 points. For the game, Cowley committed a season-high 28 turnovers that were converted into 26 points.

Broncbuster point guard Sierra Driessen scored 13 of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter as Garden City improved its record to 9-1 overall and 4-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. Cowley, which was outscored 25-4 to end Saturday's game, was led in scoring by Anna Przyszlak's 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Before Garden City's comeback, Cowley had used a 22-11 third quarter to take a 41-37 lead into the final quarter of play. The Lady Tigers then opened the fourth quarter with a pair of three-pointers by freshmen Georgia Knight and Aiyana Big Man during a 14-2 which saw Cowley lead 55-39.

"We were playing well up to that point, but we have got to keep playing and finish the game," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "The turnovers killed us. Credit to Garden for making us do silly things with the basketball."

Big Man went 3-of-4 from three-point range and finished with 15 points. Cowley has dropped four games in a row and is now 7-4 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Cowley got 21 points of bench production, while Garden City's starters played the entirety of Saturday's game before Ana Ramos Pires fouled out in the final minute.

The road ahead for Cowley does not get any easier as they will face a pair of ranked opponents to end the first semester. The Lady Tigers will play at No. 15-ranked Dodge City (10-1) Wednesday at 5:30 before playing at 14th-ranked Hutchinson (10-0) Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

"We have got to stay focused on improving," Clark said.
