Lady Tigers can’t hold the lead, fall 47-39 at Coffeyville

Scoring a season-low in points, the Cowley College women's basketball team suffered a 47-39 loss at Coffeyville on Wednesday.

Cowley (11-10) has dropped three games in a row and is now 5-10 in the Jayhawk Conference. Coffeyville (14-7) moved into fifth place in the conference with a record of 9-6.

On Wednesday, Cowley held Coffeyville scoreless for the first six minutes. However, both teams made only one basket in the opening quarter as the game was tied at 4-4 after 10 minutes of play.

The teams continued to find points hard to come by in the second quarter as Coffeyville took an 18-14 lead into the halftime intermission. A three-pointer by Cowley freshman Jaiden Smith and back-to-back baskets by sophomore Ndack Mbengue helped the Lady Tigers go in front 21-18 early in the third quarter.

Sophomore Anna Przyszlak scored seven of her team-high 11 points in the third quarter as Cowley took a 30-27 lead into the final quarter of play.

Unfortunately, Cowley would go cold again, and the Red Ravens found their shooting touch while out-scoring the Lady Tigers 20-9 in the fourth quarter.

Coffeyville out-shot Cowley 36.7 percent to 25 percent from the floor. Both teams committed 17 turnovers.

"I thought we were solid defensively, but it is hard to win shooting 25 percent," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "They shot it really well in the fourth quarter, and we could not answer Coffeyville's run at the end of the game."

Along with Przyszlak's 11 points, she also grabbed 13 rebounds. However, Przyszlak made only 4-of-17 shots from the floor. Smith also scored 11 points for Cowley, while Mbengue added nine points and eight boards.

Karys Washington led Coffeyville with a game-high 12 points.

Cowley will attempt to get back on track when they host Barton Community College Saturday at 1 p.m. The Cougars are 16-5 overall and in fourth place in the conference with a record of 11-4. Barton defeated Cowley 67-55 on November 29 in Great Bend.
