Playing its home-opener Wednesday night at the Mark A. Phillips Sports Complex, the No. 9-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team, gave the home fans plenty to cheer about in a 4-0 win over Seward County.
Cowley is now 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the Jayhawk Conference after back-to-back shutout victories over Garden City and Seward.
After scoring both of Cowley's goals in a 2-0 win at Garden City on Sunday, sophomore Hina Suzuki got the scoring started on Wednesday. She added her third goal of the season only 10 minutes into the game off a beautiful assist from Manuela Gorny.
With 16 minutes left in the first half, Tiger freshman Sara Bernal increased the Cowley lead to 2-0 when she scored on a wild shot from just outside the box.
The Lady Tigers continued to keep the pressure on in the second half and got goals from Ana Hernandez and Evellyn Borges to finish off the 4-0 win.
"The victory was extremely important and not as easy as it looked," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "I was proud of how our team showed up ready to play in our first home game of the season.
Cowley out-shot Seward 15-3. Lady Tiger's starting goalkeeper, Marin Peoples, left the game in the first half with an apparent injury before freshman Emma Shockley came in to combine on the shutout.
"Manuela (Gorny) has been a leader in the back and has made a huge difference for us in these first two games," dos Santos said.
The loss drops Seward's record to 1-2-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the conference.
Cowley will attempt to improve its record to 3-0 when they play at Dodge City (0-3-1) on Sunday at 4 p.m.
"Going on the road in the conference is not easy," dos Santos said. "We know we will get Dodge City's best shot, so we will take today to recover and be ready to get back at it on Sunday."
