Tigers’ win streak comes to a halt at No. 2-ranked Coffeyville

In a battle of ranked teams, the No. 15-ranked Cowley College men's basketball team had its eight-game winning streak come to an end with a 107-85 loss at No. 2-ranked Coffeyville on Saturday.

Coffeyville (13-0) moves two games in front of both Cowley and Butler Community College in the Jayhawk East standings. The Red Ravens are now 11-0 in the Jayhawk East, while the Tigers (9-4) fall to 9-4 overall and 9-2 in the conference.

After falling behind 15-7, Cowley rallied to grab the lead at 23-22 midway through the first half. However, the Red Ravens would go back in front by as many as 13 points (46-36) before settling for a 49-42 halftime advantage.

Cowley would pull within 62-60 following a three-pointer by Cevin Clark with 12 minutes left, but Coffeyville would answer with an 8-0 run to push its lead back to double digits.

The Red Ravens' lead would hover around 10 points until Coffeyville out-scored the Tigers 28-16 over the final six minutes of play.

"It was a lot closer game than the final score would indicate," Cowley head coach Tommy DeSalme said. "It was a tough, old school matchup. All the credit goes to Coffeyville, they were ready after having a week to prepare to play."

Coffeyville out-shot Cowley 52.9 percent to 34.6 percent from the floor. Sophomores Mike'l Henderson (15 points), and Dalen Ridgnal (14 points, 18 rebounds) led the Tigers in scoring, but combined to make just 8-of-32 attempts from the floor.

"Coffeyville made everything we did really hard," DeSalme said. "We struggled to make perimeter shots to loosen things up."

Freshman forward Hayden Brittingham came off the bench to go 8-of-11 from the floor and lead Coffeyville with 17 points and seven rebounds in only 19 minutes of action. The Red Ravens had 10 players score five or more points as they remained unbeaten.

The Tigers' 85 points were there second fewest points scored in a game this season.

A bright spot in the loss was the play of freshman Tarese Morse, who came off the bench to finish with seven points and seven rebounds in 13 minutes of action.

"Tarese played perhaps his best game of the season," DeSalme said.

Cowley will return home to face a Butler Community College squad that has won seven games in a row and are tied with the Tigers for second place in the Jayhawk East.

"This group of sophomores seems to respond after a loss," DeSalme said. "We have got to protect our home court."
