Showcasing the strength of its squad, the No. 14-ranked Cowley College wrestling team took down a pair of ranked opponents while going 7-2 at the NJCAA Coaches Duals held Friday and Saturday in Miami, OK.
Cowley defeated 10th-ranked Snow Community College 31-24 and 13th-ranked Labette 31-13. The Tigers also defeated Barton (50-6), Big Bend Community College (40-14), Otero Junior College (57-0), Neosho County (48-4), and Southwestern Oregon (39-7).
Cowley's two team losses came against sixth-ranked North Idaho College (41-4) and 12th-ranked Rochester (24-21) Community and Tech College.
Tiger freshman Shawn Bamba wrestled at 149 pounds and picked up wins over a pair of top-15 ranked opponents. At 141 pounds, Evan Rodriguez went unbeaten in his nine matches.
Wrestling at 165 pounds, Jacen Jackson pinned third-ranked Davion King of Labette and
Branningan Reyes pinned sixth-ranked Andre Letoda from Snow College in the 184-pound weight class.
"It was a tough tournament, but our guys picked up a lot of ranked wins and finished strong," Cowley head coach Justice Circle said. "After losing a tight dual to Rochester that we thought we had wrapped up and taken a lump against North Idaho, we did a good job of coming back to win the consolation bracket against some solid ranked teams."
The Tigers will have a busy week ahead as they will participate in a tri-dual with Barton and Neosho on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Great Bend, KS. Cowley will return home to face Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa in a dual on Friday at 7 p.m. inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
"We expect to go in there and take care of business on Thursday and then turn around and make weight again on Friday for what will be another challenge against a NOC-Tonkawa team we consider a rival in the making," Circle said.
Friday's dual will be the first of three straight home duals for the Tigers.
