Top-ranked Cowley volleyball remains unbeaten heading into matchup with Highland

Playing its final regular season home matches of the season, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team defeated Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 25-20, 25-14, 25-14 before knocking off the Ottawa University JV 25-15, 25-14, 25-22 Friday night inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.

With the wins, Cowley improves its record to 33-0 on the season. Friday night's matches were the final regular season home games for the Lady Tiger sophomores.

"We started slow against NEO, but once we picked up our defense we were able to play our game," Cowley head coach Steven Gream said. "These games allowed our sophomores to play and got us prepared for Highland on Wednesday."

Laci Beougher led Cowley with 13 kills, while Iva Halacheva added 11 kills. Setter Rossana Papa also played well, recording a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs.

Against the Ottawa JV, sophomore Maddy Pitts, who recently made her season debut after battling back from injury, finished with a season-high 12 kills.

"Maddy has done a good job of shedding the rust and bouncing back from injury," Gream said. "She had a solid swing and it was nice to see her contribute on Sophomore Night."

Halacheva led the Lady Tigers with 17 kills, while sophomore Macy Shreffler added four kills and two blocks.

Cowley will have a couple of days to prepare to play for the conference title when they play at Highland Community College Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Scotties (27-5) are also unbeaten in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division with a record of 9-0.

"Highland is a quality opponent that puts up a big block," Gream said. "We will need to tune out their crowd and play our game."
